  • BBC articles, Inside Out, that combine writing, photos, and videos.
  • Various YouTube videos that are good for student presentations, oral exams, or just for discussion.

    • Rubiks cube, an extra from the movie "Pursuit of Happyness"
    • Animal Odd Couple
    • Christian the Lion - sorry for the corny music, but this version has a good explaination of the background.
    • A cheesy video from the 1980s with Malcolm-Jamal Warner from "The Cosby Show" about how to be cool. I think it's funny because it's so far from what "cool" is for today's youth.
    • Equally cheesy, but informative clip about the yo-yo.
    • Interesting presentation with thought-provoking statistics about how the world is changing wrt technology.
    • Britain's Got Talent etc. are good conversation starters.

Other

  • This is a history resource, but some of the themes match things we teach in English.
  • Another history page, but has some great material that is relevant and useful. For example American Civil War, Famous Crimes, The American West.
  • Library of Congress "Learning Page for Teachers" has lesson plans, access to original material etc.
  • My Hero is a project where students are invited to write essays, or create videos about someone they admire. It's also a great resource if you want a text about an influential figure written by a young person.
  • The Dialectizer takes text or other web pages and instantly creates parodies of them.
  • United Nations Cyberschoolbus allows students to compare graphs and charts about country data.
  • A FANTASTIC sight called ReadWriteThink. Hundreds of lesson plan ideas around reading and writing, and the best part is the student materials section that has for example, a comic creator, character analysis mapping, crossword puzzle generator, CD cover creator (and those are just some of the Cs!) and then it also lists possible lessons you can use the interactive tools in.
